To my understanding, you're usually suspending your session to RAM, which requires constant power to prevent your session from being lost. The problem here, being that your battery will continue to drain, and your system will still generate heat-not as quickly as if you were using it, though. Sleep: Sleeping your computer reduces your power consumption, but is still powering the entire system such that you can resume as quickly as possible.
